Terms of Service

Last updated: 25 May 2026

1. About Detour

Detour is a service operated by William Renwick, a UK-based individual trader ("we", "us", "our"). These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of detourmaps.co and the Detour mobile application (together, the "Service").

By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

Contact us at hello@detourmaps.co with any questions.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use Detour. If you are under 18, you must have permission from a parent or guardian. By using the Service you confirm you meet these requirements.

3. Your account

You are responsible for keeping your account secure and for all activity that occurs under it. We use email magic links for sign-in — ensure you have access to your registered email address.

You may delete your account at any time via Settings → Delete account. We will permanently delete your data within 30 days (subject to legal retention obligations — see our Privacy Policy).

4. Detour Plus subscription

4.1 What's included

Detour Plus is a recurring monthly subscription that provides: ad-free route pages (no affiliate product blocks), and unlimited speed-limit map views. Benefits are available on detourmaps.co and the Detour mobile app while your subscription is active.

4.2 Price and billing

The launch price is £2.99 per month (GBP, inclusive of any applicable taxes). This price may change; if it does, we will notify you at least 30 days in advance and your subscription will continue at the previous price until your next renewal after the change date.

Payment is taken at the end of your free trial (if applicable) and then monthly on the same calendar day. Payment is processed by Stripe. You authorise Stripe to charge your payment method on this recurring basis.

4.3 Free trial

New subscribers are offered a 7-day free trial. A valid payment method is required to start the trial. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, your payment method will be charged £2.99. Each account is eligible for one free trial; additional subscriptions on the same account do not include a trial period.

4.4 Cancellation

You may cancel at any time via Settings → Billing → Manage subscription (on detourmaps.co). Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period — you retain access to Detour Plus until then and are not charged again. We do not offer partial-month refunds.

4.5 Your right to cancel (cooling-off)

Under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, you have the right to cancel a digital service contract within 14 days of purchase without giving a reason (the "cooling-off period").

By starting your Detour Plus trial or subscription, you expressly request that we begin providing the digital service immediately, and you acknowledge that you lose your right to cancel during the 14-day cooling-off period once the service has been fully performed. Because Detour Plus is a subscription (not fully performed at the moment of purchase), you may still cancel within 14 days and receive a prorated refund for any unused days if you have been charged. To request this refund, email hello@detourmaps.co within 14 days of purchase.

4.6 Refunds

Outside the 14-day statutory period, we do not offer refunds. If there is a technical issue on our side that prevents access to a paid benefit, contact us and we will investigate and provide appropriate remedies.

4.7 Changes to Detour Plus

We reserve the right to add, modify, or remove Detour Plus benefits. We will notify active subscribers at least 30 days before materially reducing benefits. You may cancel without penalty if you disagree with changes.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for unlawful purposes or in violation of any applicable law.
  • Reverse-engineer, scrape, or extract data from the Service beyond normal use (e.g. using automated tools to bulk-download routes).
  • Post content that is defamatory, offensive, inaccurate, or infringes another person's rights (e.g. photos you do not own).
  • Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the Service.
  • Use the Service in a way that harms other users or the infrastructure.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account if you breach these rules, without prior notice.

6. Your content

You retain ownership of content you submit (reviews, photos). By submitting content you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to display and distribute it as part of the Service. You are responsible for ensuring you have the rights to any content you submit.

7. Our content and intellectual property

Route data on Detour is derived from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL). Our own content — including the Detour brand, design, editorial descriptions, and software — is our intellectual property. You may not reproduce or use it without permission.

Affiliate links to Amazon products may appear on route pages for free-tier users. We earn a small commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you (Amazon Associates programme).

8. Disclaimer and limitation of liability

The Service is provided "as is". Detour is a route discovery tool — it does not guarantee that roads are open, safe, or accurately described. Always drive to road conditions and comply with applicable traffic law.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential losses arising from your use of the Service, including but not limited to damage to a vehicle, fines, accidents, or loss of data.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under English law.

9. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will indicate the date of the last update at the top of this page. For material changes, we will notify you by email if you have an account. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

10. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales, except that nothing prevents you from bringing a claim in the courts of your home jurisdiction if you are a UK consumer.
